As a Southern Californian Wedding Photographer, I believe there’s an undeniable charm to a backyard wedding in San Diego. The city’s near-perfect climate, stunning landscapes, and relaxed atmosphere make a backyard celebration an intimate, unforgettable experience for couples and their guests.
Margot and Sean chose to tie the knot in their own backyard in Carlsbad, just north of San Diego. Their wedding day was filled with vibrant colors, laughter, and heartfelt moments, and I was honored to capture these beautiful photos.
The Appeal of a Backyard Wedding
Backyard weddings come with the benefit of flexibility. Without the restrictions of a traditional venue, you have complete freedom to design the timeline, layout, and overall vibe that best fits your vision. An intimate setting allows for genuine moments, from heartfelt toasts by lifelong friends to impromptu dancing beneath a sky full of stars. These are the kind of memories that make backyard weddings truly special.
Another great aspect of hosting a wedding in your own backyard is the opportunity to create a uniquely personal setting. With endless possibilities for creativity and customization, you can incorporate elements that feel authentic to you as a couple. And in San Diego, the natural beauty of the surroundings makes it even easier to craft a stunning backdrop without needing a lot of embellishment. The mild weather, lush greenery, and coastal ambiance provide the perfect foundation for a beautiful, heartfelt celebration.
Backyard Wedding Details
Margot and Sean’s backyard wedding was a perfect mix of romance and whimsy. String lights were hung above the tables, adorned with white lanterns and ribbons, creating a magical atmosphere. At one end, a large disco ball caught the sunlight, adding a playful sparkle to the space.
As guests arrived, they picked up their personalized cocktail glasses, which doubled as both escort cards and wedding favors. They were greeted by a bar offering refreshing options like sunset sangria, grapefruit margaritas, beer, and wine. Cocktail tables adorned with simple floral arrangements were set up around the yard, offering a spot to rest drinks and plates while enjoying a delectable charcuterie board for an appetizer with grapes, meats, and cheeses.
Long guest tables were elegantly dressed in white linens with taper candles and florals in creamy tones with soft pops of color. A local catering company provided a delicious California-Mexican inspired feast, with a build-your-own taco bar with all the fixings, making the celebration even more personalized and relaxed.
Margot wore a simple yet elegant satin dress with spaghetti straps, featuring a high-low full skirt and floral embellishments, paired with a satin neck sash. Shawn looked sharp in a cream suit and white shirt, perfectly complementing the laid-back elegance of the day. The couple invited their guests to wear colorful attire, adding vibrant hues of pinks, purples, peaches, blues, and even a dash of lemon yellow and gold throughout the celebration. The couple’s dog even joined in the fun, donning a tuxedo collar for the occasion.
